  • When a sprint doesn’t begin until 175m from the line, usually the first to jump will win. In this case, I’m not sure if MvP was already in the process of beginning his sprint when WvA jumped, or if MVP has reflexes faster than a cobra, but they opened their sprints at nearly the identical moment. Since WvA instantly pulled out for a drag race (no drafting with slingshot) and was able to out-accelerate MvP enough to be nearly even with him, had MvP waited (or reacted) literally 1/2 second later, he would have lost.

    Bruce SandersBruce SandersMaand geleden
    • MVDP said in the post race interview that he was only eying WVA in the last k. He knew that his own onset is better so that he could cover WVA's initial attack. He just hoped that it wouldnt be too far to the line from that point on. Also, he said the lactate 'burst through his ears' multiple times during the sprint :D and that he initially thought that he launched his jump for the finish too late and had lost. Edit: Hence the extra emotional reaction!

      M BM BMaand geleden
    • Gustavo Goni ...I believe if you look carefully (maybe use slo-mo), you’ll see that WvA jumped first. And that brief moment was part of the reason WvA was able to move forward, alongside MvdP. Additionally, by “advantage” if you mean WvA was never closer to the finish line than MvdP during the sprint, then yes, he kept his “advantage”. However, in the English language, “keeping his advantage” means that no part of the advantage was relinquished, and that’s just not true. WvA was directly behind MvdP and rode faster during the sprint, thus eliminating the majority of MvdP’s advantage. But, MvdP retained about 15% of his advantage, thus enabling MvdP to cross the finish line first.

      Bruce SandersBruce SandersMaand geleden

  • What a shame for Wout. I feel for the guy. 3 big races, 3 times 2nd. But he won Milaan-Sanremo and Strade Bianchi ánd two Tour stages. On top of that two silver medals in his first world championship on the road. And now 2nd in Flanders. And he's wiining best sportsman this year in Belgium (obviously). Too bad they cancelled Paris-Roubaix. He has won ALL of his goals, or ended at the 2nd place. That's one hell of a season.

Kiya Lee Levy RunayaKiya Lee Levy RunayaMaand geleden
    • @Premier K9 dude, I'm from Belgium. Cyclocross is basically a national sport here. VDP isn't better. They're evenly matched and have always been. I dare even say that Wout has always been a few % better. Especially is cyclocross. Nearly every race was basically drawn out for VDP. And Wout always sticked with him, always came in 2nd. Despite it not being his type of parcours. He liked heavy races, muddy, hilly. But almost everything was fast with a lot of turns, which was perfect for VDP. the fact he won was logical, the fact Wout came in 2nd wasn't. That was the accomplishment. Because if you switch the board and do a Wout parcours then VDP is barely in the top 10. And on the road; yes, VDP has more wins. Sure. With all the small races he does against lesser teams? Logical. All of Wout's wins are against the best of the best. He dominated from the first race post-corona untill now. And he would've won Gent-Wevelgem if VDP wasn't being a dick because Wout's better. Also, VDP's style is to attack when he thinks he's better. Didn't see him attack. Wout's style is usually just full gas and then sprint if need be. Two different types, both the best in their class. But no, VDP is not the better one. He has more wins, yes. Much more. Which are evidence of his class and talent. But he's definitely not above Wout. The thing's Wout had done, I'd like to see VDP try. Btw, world championships. VDP said the parcours was too hard for him. Wout took silver. Point and case.
