Here’s Why PS5 Joysticks Drift (and Why They’ll Only Get Worse)

19 feb. 2021

Mere months have passed since the PS5’s hotly anticipated launch, and already there’s a class-action lawsuit brewing over joystick drift on Sony’s high-tech DualSense controllers. Who could have seen this coming? Well, as it turns out, everyone. Everyone should have seen this coming. Because for all its exciting new tech, the DualSense uses off-the-shelf joystick hardware with a long history of predictable, preventable issues. And now we’ve investigated those issues in excruciating detail.
Sony isn’t the only company to use off-the-shelf joystick modules, but, like Microsoft, they’ve made it difficult to repair this consumable component. Joysticks have a known life expectancy-it’s listed right in a product sheet from the manufacturer. In this video, we head back inside a DualSense controller to see what is failing, and how.

  • A few notes: We started this investigation due to reports of PS5 DualSense controllers drifting, but as we mention at 0:58, these findings apply to most modern joysticks! 3:14 that carbon pad has been scratched with a dental pick. The actual wear to the pads will look different, this was a demonstration since we didn't have a drifting DualSense. 3:50 sprinkling goldfish crackers into your joystick will not fix drift. Don't try this at home. Don't miss Margot the puppy desperately trying to eat Cheez-Its at 5:47

    • @Michael Ownage It depends on if the air manages to reach the sensor and if the reason for the drift was dirt on the sensor. If the air cannot reach the sensor and if the reason for the drift was not dirt then it won't work.

    • A controller redesign with inter-changable Joy-cons would not be cheap sir. The only way to do that is to encase the joy-cons in a housing that can be removed from the joy-stick. Lawsuits would in-sue from children sticking that part in their mouth. Don't blame the Industry not wanting to get sued from Bad Parenting. So if the drifting is caused by Bad Up Keep, then it's Not the Manufacturers fault for players who are Slobs playing with their joy-sticks with dirty hands or eating while playing. It's not their problem by proof of this video.

    • @Matthew Lawton Also, if they made them defective on purpose they would lose money because they have to replace your controller for free if it fails in the first two years.

  • It wouldn't be so bad if the controllers weren't stupidly expensive. The dirty truth is that the profit margin on the consoles is small but the profit margin on the gamepads is huge. The manufacturers have no incentive to make the easy to repair and/or more durable..

  • It's funny how many people are totally missing the point clearly stated in the video that this affects literally every controller on the market and isn't a new issue at all. It's just the flavor of the month in the gaming news cycle and the only reason a law suit got filed was because of the success with the Nintendo suit where the Joy-con are much more susceptible to the wear that causes drift.

I bought 1 controller and got a brand new free one every month for about 2 years, then once covid happened it became harder especially because I realized most the time Walmart has stopped carrying controllers.

Newer ones I've had drift issues with and the push down function sounds terrible and cheap. Apart from a scuff with removable joysticks someone needs to make it more affordable

  • The video fail to mention that old Playstation or XBox had a drift corrector software by recalibrating the zero each start of the system (or even just at the plugging of the controller). you can prove it by starting the system while holding a direction and releasing it after the full start. It's just that modern system do not have it anymore, the simple test prove it. smaller dead zone plus no recalibrating, leads to this failure by design.

  • If console gaming allowed you to modify the dead zone, you all would be having WAAAAY less issues. It wouldn't solve the problem, but you'd have the software support to do so. Also, allowing console gamers to freely keybind their games, have alternative keybinds, and quite frankly, introducing keyboard, mice, VR controllers, and other inputs to access menus, system UI and games will minimize wear and frustration on a console. PC users don't have to deal with drift. Keys wear out over time, they can be replaced. Often on the spot.
