  • you're telling me that the us has a lot of unhabited islands? what's stopping me from going there and declaring myself the emperor of cheeseland. Our national food is cheese/ mac and cheese and I will bring in a lot of healthy cows to produce the best of cheese. First few people who apply to become a citizen gets to become the founding father and gets to decide the rule and stuff. I hereby, declare cheeseland as a separate governing entity from the United States, that occupies wake island. September 11 2020, will forever be known as the day we achieve independence and separated from the united states. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal no matter the race, sex, religion or wealth of a person. Yes, I may have plagiarized some of this from the US declaration of independence but it can't be copyrighted because that was created for well over 200 years ago. There you go, here's the declaration. A bit short but maybe one of you guys who's into this stuff can make it better.

  • Let’s get real, the only reason why Americans don’t wanna add Porto Rico or any other territories as states is because they don’t wanna update their flag.

    Joe H.SJoe H.SMaand geleden
    • Puerto Rico just had referendum on whether or not to become a state and the majority said yes So it's now up to congress to vote on statehood. And right now the blue house won't want to let in a red leaning swing state. Similarly, a few months ago the house passed a bill that would grant DC statehood. Obviously the red senate wouldn't want 2 more blue senators. So the only thing stoping these place from becoming states is partisanship.

  • Unpopular opinion: When we had holdings in Cuba, PR, The Dominican Republic (Haiti), Philippines; and instead, pushed for integration and Statehood before the 1900's began, poverty levels are fundamentally improved, 'racial' 'cultural' 'linguisitic' intermixing has no choice but to be a fact of life, and those 4 plus the amalgamted pacific islands bring us to 55 states & Japan had to take a different tact during WW2. Fewer white Guy presidents, MLK had more and greater allies, and the Jim Crow south was excised sooner. Double bonus, because the US is in this situation as wide as a hemisphere, Governors MUST have more importance than the Federal Govt, because LIKE HELL a sub 10x10 mi2 citadel gets to accurately try to run the life of 500 million.

  • Yes... US statehood is only "permanent". In the exact same sense that there were 13 "permanent" British colonies. Yes, the first attempt failed, but there's no guarantee a second attempt would fail. Or a third. Or a fourth. They will happen. It's only a matter of time at this point.

    Grant JohnsonGrant JohnsonMaand geleden
    • @BoomerLemon Well, that's pretty much how it always goes, doesn't it? History written by the victors, might makes right, and all that jazz?

      Grant JohnsonGrant JohnsonMaand geleden
    • @Grant Johnson good point, it's not legal to leave. but whoever wins the war, decides That and California should just be wiped of the map, replace it with a different territory.

      BoomerLemonBoomerLemonMaand geleden
    • @BoomerLemon There's also been 4 Ohio Supreme Court rulings that the state's school funding system is unconstitutional, and yet it remains the same. (For one example.) That's because the Supreme Court can interpret the law all it wants, but it has no authority to enforce it - that's the job of the executive branch. So... can a state *legally* leave the union? No. Can a state *actually* leave the union? Yes, if it successfully fights its way out, or the rest of the country lets it go. That said, I'm still hoping California would just up and leave. It may do so at any time, with my blessing.

      Grant JohnsonGrant JohnsonMaand geleden
    • There was a supreme court decision that said you can't leave the union regardless.

      BoomerLemonBoomerLemonMaand geleden
    • @franky boy I'm suggesting that the ideological divisions within our country have become so deep that it's only a matter of time before one side pushes the other too far and wide-spread violence breaks out; and I don't mean just Texas. I neither support nor oppose that occurrence. It's just the natural, inevitable result of a person or group earnestly believing their very existence is in danger. They will fight the threat - real or perceived - like cornered animals. That's the reason why the independence movements of India and some other countries from Britain were successful despite being relatively bloodless - they knew that the British were not a threat to "their very lives"; that the British were, at heart, decent people... and were very tired of war! Had Britain been more like, say, Nazi Germany, and not cared a whit about hunger strikes and other non-violent protests, India would still be a Crown Colony... or it would have revolted violently. Different people will consider "existence" more broadly than simply life itself. The colonies revolted because their "existence" (their financial well-being and personal freedom) was threatened by Britain. They had been made into de facto second-class citizens through lack of Parliamentary representation (which, as British citizens, was their right under British law). This mindset was excellently summarized by Patrick Henry when he said "Give me liberty, or give me death!" - in other words, without the freedom that is my right as a human being, I may as well be dead. Like I said... it's inevitable. It's just a matter of when, where, who, and how.

      Jasper 6Jasper 6Maand geleden

      Juice AddictionJuice AddictionMaand geleden
    • @Jasper 6 i dont see why it being hispanic matters for instance california was orignally owned by the spanish it didnt have a large white population until after the gold rush also it really wouldnt not when comparing to states like idaho and maine where they are small and mostly farmers puerto rico has alot of major cities as well as harbout transport it would be a better adittion also all of the population is american or at least a large majority as anyone born there gains american citizenship so what are you defining as american?

      franky boyfranky boyMaand geleden

Also, our Bill of rights curtails the power of the Federal government, as does our bicameral legislature. All in all, our Federal government seems weaker to me than the EU.
