Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hellboy Samaritan Carrying Case!

21 nov. 2020

Even though Adam's build of the Hellboy Samaritan prop replica is yet to be completed, the project is at a point where he wants to properly store and display the piece in a carrying case appropriate to the universe of Hellboy. We know how much Adam loves making in-universe boxes, and the Samaritan goes through this rite of passage as Adam paints, weathers, and creates a stenciled logo for the case that his Samaritan will live in between upgrades and additional work!

  • Hi Adam - Great Builds that Tested has going on. I have a question completely off subject: My wife just purchased 60 pounds of used LEGO's for me as a Christmas Present, which she graciously allowed me to open early. I have purchased some new LEGO's, but mostly have bought from a variety of places - mostly estate sales, garage sales, and etc. First, what do you call the process of sorting - Nerdling, Noling, or something like that? My process starts out with a good washing - I used the dish washer without her consent, so have since gone to other means which involves several cleaning "vats" with Clorox and then rinsing. So far, no problem with bleach doing anything to the items. Now, what is the best process to proceed with involving the sorting process? Do you separate by color, size, or what? I know 60 pounds or approximately 120 pounds with earlier purchases, isn't near what you have but what would you suggest this retired coal miner should do with my treasures? P.S. there were several LEGO Build instructions with the purchase, and I could see a lot of items that go to those builds, in particular my wife was helping me and she picked out a bunch of items from the Architect London Bridge kit. So it will be interesting. Lonnie Anderson (An old Coal Mine Electrician, retired)

  • Firstly, it came out AWESOME! Secondly, instead of sitting there with the exacto and hand cutting out the font, couldn’t another way of completing that much fast would have be to drag the graphic into your cricket software (though I prefer silhouette myself), trace it and have it cut it out for you in about 2 minutes? Regardless- many ways to skin a cat.

  • Relicing-trick from the guitar world: glue different size pebbles and small rocks onto a chopstick or popsicle stick. Lay the rock on a spot and whack it with a soft hammer (wooden mallet, rubber, something like that) on different spots with the different rocks to make dents that look more organic. You probably already know this trick, but I only saw you using a hammer on this (and other projects) so just wanted to remind you of it! Cool build as always

  • Do you remember the original 'bondo' smell too? It was a chemical called toluene which is also part of TNT. Its used or was used in stripping bitumen from aggregate, so it could be tested to meet the requirements of the mix of the tarmac. And it was / is a great paint stripper but will go off if in a non airtight container, at my cost! I to am an ex graphic designer /screen printer and have cut and drawn fonts, and also was a grafitti artist too. So I love a good font and now that grafitti fonts are being recognised too. So my poor phone's memory is a bit full of different fonts, but also many font styles that have become part of my own writing styles. Yes I have more than 3 lol, and I daresay you do too? Do you do the Xmas wrapping of the presents, I do and it drove my friends and family nuts as it was so perfect, but I now have come to like Japanese wrapping styles.

Like is it just a deep dive into online shopping or traversing flea markets and antique stores? Driving down the road and picking up trash from someone's yard (with their permission)? A little bit of everything and more?
